Let’s Review 2023’s Biggest Beauty Trends
Beauty Pie analysed the popularity of different trends on social media platforms and Google to discover the biggest trends of 2023 – combining the total number of TikTok views, Instagram posts, Pinterest boards and the annual search volume on Google over the past 12 months for each trend. Press-on nails have come a long way since they were last popular in the late noughties and with almost 8 billion total engagements, they’re the ‘number one’ biggest beauty trend of 2023 according to the study. This temporary nail art trend quickly sky-rocketed in popularity after Kim Kardashian revealed on Instagram that her iconic stiletto-shaped French mani was all thanks to artificial ‘stick-on’ nails. Since then, the nail trend has been popping up on perfectly manicured hands around the world and has even been spotted on the runways of global fashion weeks. Curtain bangs, with over 4.2 billion engagements is the second biggest beauty trend that’s been everywhere this year, and just behind, with 3.1 billion engagements, is glass skin. Other trends in the top 10 include micro-needling, lymphatic drainage, ceramides and faux freckles.
Top 10 Biggest Beauty Trends of 2023
1. Press-on nails – 7,907,169,916 total engagements

Are you Ready For 2024’s Biggest Beauty Trends
To discover the ingredients, products, techniques, and approaches that will be trending in 2024, Beauty Pie’s research team tracked and analysed Google search volume for hundreds of new trends. By calculating the total number of Google searches over the past six months and comparing it to the previous six months, the beauty experts have revealed, which ones are seeing the biggest spike in popularity in the run-up to 2024.
The Scandi hairline is the top trend that the experts expect to see everywhere next year. Made popular by the likes of Matilda Djerf, the coloring trend involves adding lightener onto the hair that naturally falls onto your face. The result? Better framed features and an instant pop of color to give that Scandi cool glow. Google searches for Scandi hairline have surged by 6,748% ahead of 2024, so it’s definitely one to watch.
Other hair trends also dominate the top 10 – in fact almost half of the trends in the ranking are related to hair styles. The butterfly bob has seen popularity spike by 466%, interest in the preppy bob has increased by 311% and vanilla chai hair has also seen a 257% surge in Google searches ahead of 2024.
Cherry cola lips (+2,215%), espresso make-up (+678%) and balletcore make-up (+253%) are three make-up looks in the top 10, and chocolate milk nails (+1,350%), lavender chrome nails (+369%), and milk bath nails (+286%) are three nail trends that are set to influence 2024.

UK Nail Enthusiast launches Biodegradable & Compostable Nail Tips into the Nail Industry

ARTICLE BY ALEX FOX | PUBLISHED IN 2023
Claws by Tiger Taylor is the world’s first biodegradable and sustainable answer to the global artificial/ plastic press-on nail industry. Born out of lockdown nail enthusiast, Tiger Taylor, realised the need for an eco-friendly and easy-to-use alternative to acrylic plastic nails. A mission-driven beauty business looking to change the way people think about nails, Claws, by Tiger Taylor, nail products aim to change the perception of ‘fake’ and acrylic nails by providing a product that is both fashion considered and sustainable.
This elevated nail kit is the world’s first recyclable, biodegradable, compostable and sustainable way to enjoy nail transformation. Both the nails and case are made from biodegradable plastic. The case is both durable and reusable, but when composted in the right conditions, it’s eventually biodegradable. The Claws nails are made from oxybiodegradable plastic, also known as OBP, which contains an antioxidant and pro-oxidant additive that acts as an accelerator in the degradation process. The material is totally biodegradable and can be safely consumed by microorganisms in the soil, thus being transformed into carbon, water and humus. So, instead of the 400 years it takes for regular plastic nail tips to dissolve, the degradation process of this product is approximately 2-3years, in the right conditions. By purchasing a set of Claws by Tiger Taylor, you are helping to change the market by using this innovative and sustainable solution to nail beauty. For nail professionals, at last there is an alternative for press-on nails, for color pops, for editorial and session shoots and the masses of nail tips used at fashion weeks.

Hazel Dixon
ARTIST OF THE MONTH
An international nail champion, educator, product developer, expert, judge and artist, Hazel Dixon has her finger in every nail pie imaginable, but where did it all start?

ARTICLE BY ALEX FOX | PUBLISHED IN 2023
Known worldwide as an award-winning Fantasy Nail Art champion, Hazel was up to her neck in nappies, AKA diapers, when she was drawn into the world of nails. Seduced by the creative edge that nail styling presents, as well as the ability to stay at home with her three young children, Hazel swiftly immersed herself in everything nails. “I was drawn to the idea of doing nails when I saw an airbrushed set sporting the Nike logo. I’d never seen anything like it before,” Hazel recalls. Her interest sparked and creative taste buds tickled, Hazel looked directly into courses as, she confesses, “I felt it couldn’t be that hard, but boy was I in for a shock!”
Attracted to a schedule of working evenings and weekends around her family, Hazel quickly realized it was more a calling than a quick-fix solution. “I love nails,” she chuckles. “I can explore my creative edge while transforming nails into tiny pieces of art. The buzz I get when I’ve finished a set, and see the client’s face light up, renders me speechless, it’s such a powerful, positive feeling.” Boasting a wide repertoire of nail skills, Hazel admits her strengths lie in both structure as well as all nail art genres including extreme techniques. Entering the world of nails in 2006, she took her initial training with CND and has since taken over 73 different classes with an array of brands including Akzentz, NSI, EzFlow, Crystal Nails, Brillbird, as well as completing an NVQ 3 in nails, and untold trainings with a host of award-winning educators across the world. Hazel cites, “Great education, lots of patience, an immense amount of practice and fantastic ongoing support from educators,” as the secret to her ongoing success.
Keen to share her entrepreneurial spirit, the highly decorated trophy and medal winner, Hazel, hung up her competition brushes in 2021 and picked up the mentor mantle. With her own nail brand (HD Professional Systems) and academy to run, alongside her salon, Hazel stood down from the competition circuit in order to use her expertise to support others moving in that spectrum. Working one day a week in her salon, Purely Nailz, Hazel’s philosophy steers her into keeping on top of her salon skills while innovating and raising industry standards. She explains, “The HD Nail Artist Academy has several locations up and down the UK where the 10-strong educator team presents a full array of ABT accredited courses plus workshops from total beginners to the most advanced techniques.” Located in the patchwork of pines and heathland that make up Thetford Forest in Norfolk, Hazel’s trinity comprising salon, academy and warehouse is a hive of activity and a thriving family business. “My academy offers something for everyone. Over the past few years I’ve written over 100 classes and workshops, presenting an array of training that best suits individual needs. I offer both in-house and online training, however, it’s my belief that complete beginners should only be taught in-house due to the science that must be covered. I feel it’s so important the educator be beside the student every step of the way.”
With two types of online training on the menu, Hazel is sure she’s got all bases and learning styles catered for. “Online training is packaged as pre-recorded workshops for existing techs with core, fundamental nail knowledge already in their repertoire. I also offer live Zoom training sessions, which are not accredited, but for students that prefer having the educator ‘live’ with them whilst learning.” A boost like no other, a mentoring program offers significant advantages to those who take the plunge. Mentor, Hazel advises, “Find a fellow, passionate nail tech or mentor. Surround yourself with like-minded people that will encourage, motivate and help you through the good and bad times. Having someone you can call or message that ‘gets you’, is so important. I don’t know what I’d have done without the people who keep me motivated on a daily basis.” Hazel also encourages nail pros to, “Invest your time and money wisely. Research the academy properly before taking a course, to ensure it can provide you with the skills and outcomes you’re looking to achieve, then be specific about this, don’t try to ‘learn’ too much, too quickly. Take your time and be sure you’ve successfully learned and perfected each skill before moving onto the next. Choose one that offers ongoing support, as this is so important.” Believing in a ‘practice makes perfect’ work ethic, Hazel concludes, “I don’t get time for hobbies, but I always make time for my husband and family, as well as indulging in retail therapy and dinner dates. Quality time outside of nails is essential to success, for balance as well as to relieve and relax the mind.” Hazel’s mantra sums this up nicely.
“Be happy with what you have, while working for what you want.”

Is the cuticle tissue dead or alive
Is the cuticle tissue dead or alive?
Discover the cuticle basics that every nail tech should know.

ARTICLE BY ALISHA RIMANDO | PUBLISHED IN 2023
Cuticle is a thin layer of colorless dead tissue between the proximal nail fold, eponychium and the nail plate. Together they form a seal to keep pathogens from infecting the matrix area. To avoid product lifting in this area, best practice is to remove all cuticle that is directly attached to the nail plate, so polish and other nail products can adhere directly to the nail and not atop the cuticle. To gently detach cuticle from the nail plate, dip a 2×2 gauze square in cuticle remover and gently scrub the nail plate in a circular motion up to the eponychium. Trim excess cuticle or hangnails with a sharp cuticle nipper.
One Stroke: From Canvas to Nails

Exploring the Historical Origins of the One Stroke Nail Art Technique

ARTICLE BY ALISHA RIMANDO | PUBLISHED IN 2023
In 1995 American artist Donna S. Dewberry, patented a ‘One Stroke’ technique that she’d develop. This new idea allowed painters to blend, shade and highlight all in one stroke of a brush. The concept consists of loading a brush with two or three separate colors and achieving the shading and highlighting in just one simple stroke. By 2010 nail technicians around the globe began adopting this technique for their nail art. Archival records and articles Circa 1700’s show that the Schools of Art in the UK trained apprentices in the ‘onestroke’ style as it was a quick method of painting for commercial reasons – to speedily decorate furniture, pottery and trays for selling.

Ombré nails are a stunning way to express your style and creativity.

ARTICLE BY ALISHA RIMANDO | PUBLISHED IN 2023
An ombré design is when one color fades into another and the meeting point creates a seamless blend of the two. Ombré is from the French word meaning ‘shaded’ or ‘shading’. It is a degradation of colors from dark to light or light to dark. This technique can be used with any nail art medium. Nail artists previously called this technique a ‘color fade’ or ‘color graduation’ in the 1990’s. The term ombre’ was coined in 2010 when hairdressers set the trend fading hair from dark to light.
