Ask Alisha: Understanding Gel Curing Times
ASK ALISHA
ARTICLE BY ALISHA RIMANDO | PUBLISHED IN 2025
One of the most common questions I get is about curing times. With so many options—10 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds—how do you know which one to use? The key is understanding your product and your lamp.
What Determines Curing Time?
Each gel product has a recommended curing time based on its formulation. Lighter colors and thinner layers often require less time, while darker colors and builder gels may need longer exposure. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure the perfect cure.
What is a Flash Cure?
A flash cure is a quick zap of LED or UV light, usually 5 to 15 seconds. This will freeze your design in place. This technique is a lifesaver when creating intricate nail art. If you’re painting delicate lines, lettering, or tiny details, flash curing helps prevent smudging and spreading, locking each step before you move on.
Standard LED Curing Times
- 5-10 seconds: Will cure some base gels.
- 30 seconds: Works for most gel polish colors and base gels.
- 60 seconds: Ideal for some gel polishes, gel paints, gel top coats, some highly-pigmented colors, builder gels, and hard gels
- 90 seconds: Needed for some gel top coats.
- UV vs. LED: If using a UV lamp, double the curing time compared to an LED light.

The Golden Rule
When in doubt, read the label! Every gel formula is different and following the manufacturer’s instructions is essential for durability and longevity. And remember, flash curing is your best friend when working with intricate designs!
Got more curing questions? I’m happy to help! Keep the great questions coming, and let’s keep learning and growing together!
Until next time,
Alisha

Ask Alisha: Should I Practice on My Own Nails?
ASK ALISHA

ARTICLE BY ALISHA RIMANDO | PUBLISHED IN 2025
Hi everyone! It’s Alisha Rimando here, and I’m so excited to answer your questions in this ASK ALISHA episode and blog. This time, we’re diving into a question I get asked all the time: Should I work on my own nails when practicing?
My answer? Absolutely YES!

Here’s why: the best way to understand what your clients are feeling and experiencing is by doing the work on yourself. When you practice on your own nails, you can feel how the file glides across the skin and how different pressures and techniques affect the natural nail. You also get the chance to see how the products wear over time—how they hold up, how they lift (or don’t), and how they feel day-to-day.

Wearing your own work is one of the most effective ways to learn and advertise. You’ll immediately notice what’s working and what isn’t. Maybe a product is too brittle, or your shaping could be improved—this hands-on experience will help you refine your skills. The best part is you can review your work any time of day to see how it’s holding up!
In the beginning, finding models to practice on can be challenging. That’s where using yourself is such an advantage! You’re always available, and you can practice as much as you need without pressure. It’s also the perfect opportunity to test out new techniques or products you’ve been curious about.

So, my advice? Don’t be afraid to experiment and take risks—on yourself. Every stroke, every technique, and every trial brings you closer to mastering your craft. And trust me, your clients will notice the difference in your skill and confidence.
Keep the great questions coming, and let’s keep learning and growing together! Don’t forget to check out the all the ASK ALISHA videos for even more tips and insights.

French Manicure Variations Dominate the Golden Globes Red Carpet
TAKE 5
ARTICLE BY ALISHA RIMANDO | PUBLISHED IN 2025
This year’s Golden Globes red carpet was a masterclass in nail art, with the French manicure taking center stage. A timeless favorite, this elegant nail trend was given fresh life by Hollywood’s finest, who showcased a variety of creative twists. The universally flattering long oval nail shape was also on trend, adding a touch of classic sophistication to every look.
Stars like Zoe Kravitz, styled by Betina Goldstein, and Selena Gomez, manicured by Tom Bachik, stayed true to the traditional French manicure with white oval smile lines that exuded elegance and simplicity. Their nails perfectly balanced their glamorous ensembles, proving that sometimes, less is more.
@betina_goldstein
@tombachik
For those craving a bit of shine, nail artist Zola Ganzorigt created a flawless gold chrome French manicure for Mindy Kaling. This bold and modern interpretation added a metallic edge that shimmered beautifully under the red carpet lights.
@nailsbyzola
Adding a dramatic flair, nail artist Temeka Jackson showcased long almond shaped nails on her celebrity clients. For Jennifer Coolidge, Temeka airbrushed an ombre version of the French manicure and finished it with a gold cuticle cuff. This look combined the best of both worlds—classic charm and bold innovation. On Quinta Brunson, she added a unique spin with shimmering translucent raspberry nail beds featuring gold-gilded pointed edges. The rich color and metallic accents nodded to the French manicure trend while making a bold statement of their own.

The red carpet proved that the French manicure is more versatile than ever. From minimalist designs to avant-garde interpretations, the variations were as diverse as the stars themselves. Whether you prefer classic or cutting-edge, this trend is your cue to embrace the French manicure revival.
