What it is: A gently tapered nail shape that usually mimics the curvature of the proximal nail fold.

RHINESTONES

RHINESTONES [rahyn-stohn]

What it is: An imitation gemstone or diamond made from crystal, glass or plastic with a flat or faceted back in different shapes and sizes used to decorate nails.
How to use it: To embellish the nail when creating 3D nail art.
How to apply it: Applied with tweezers or a plastic tool and placed into resin or gel to adhere to the nail.
How to remove it: Dissolve adhesive or gel in acetone or product remover to loosen the rhinestone and remove.
How to store it: Usually housed in a small container where they can be easily picked up one at time.

REBALANCE

REBALANCE [ree-BAH-lans]

What it is: AKA in-fill, fill, maintenance, back-fill. A two-to three-week maintenance service to fill in the area of new growth with fresh product as well as rebalance the apex and the shape of the nail and perform any repairs needed. Sometimes used when referring to replacing and rebalancing the white portion of a pink and white nail.
How to use it: Normally performed every two to three weeks on a nail enhancement service.

NAIL VARNISH

NAIL VARNISH [Neyl vahr-nish]

What it is: AKA enamel, lacquer, nail polish, polish. A bottle and brush formula of polymer resins, plastisizers, solvents and pigments that create a hard, flexible nail coating.
How to use it: Used to beautify or strengthen the nail.
How to apply it: Most often used with a base coat, then 2 layers of color, then finished with a shiny or matte top coat.
How to remove it: Apply acetone or polish remover on a cotton pad, then gently press to the nail and slowly pull off the nail lacquer towards the free edge.
How to store it: Store with lids tightly closed in a cool, dry place and keep away from heat and light.

NAIL STICKERS

NAIL STICKERS [neyl stik-ers]

What it is: Made in various thicknesses from vinyl or other plastics with a nail design on one side and adhesive on the other.
How to use it: Used for quick and easy nail art in the salon.
How to apply it: Pull off backing, place with tweezers and cover in top coat.

NAIL BITING

What it is: The habitual act of biting the nail plate and damaging it’s surface, which can lead to a nail disorder called onychophagy.

LUNULA

LUNULA [moon]

What it is: AKA lunula. The visible part of the nail matrix. Covered by the nail plate, this crescent shaped, light white area extends from under the proximal nail fold out onto the nail bed.
How to use: Moons can be created from artificail nail products in natural shades or in bright color depending on the client’s preference or design. Moons are often seen in pink and white competition nail enhancements.
How to apply it: To create an artificial moon the product or color must cover the largest lunula completly. For consistency create the rest of the moons in the same proportions as the first. Ensure that the sizes vary slightly based on the size of the nail bed.
