EPONYCHIUM [ep-uh-nik-ee-uhm]
What it is:A thick layer of hardened living tissue that borders the base of the nail plate, directly under the surface of the proximal nail fold that forms a seal to protect the nail matrix.
How to use it:Often mistaken for the cuticle, the eponychium is the living tissue while the cuticle is the non-living tissue.
