ALLERGIC [ uh-lur-jik ]
What it is: A reaction caused by or relating to an allergy. Occurs when the immune system reacts to a foreign substance and treats it like a threat. When a person experiences an allergy, the immune system produces antibodies in a hypersensitive response to a substance, known as the allergen. The antibodies identify a particular allergen as harmful and respond by producing an allergic reaction. Symptoms can include inflamed skin, sinuses, airways and/or the digestive system and can be mild or serious.
Why it is: Allergic reactions are seen in the nail industry when repeated exposure to certain nail product ingredients is experienced, often when uncured product comes into contact with the skin and sensitization to the chemicals can occur.
