Is the cuticle tissue dead or alive?

Cuticle is a thin layer of colorless dead tissue between the proximal nail fold, eponychium and the nail plate. Together they form a seal to keep pathogens from infecting the matrix area. To avoid product lifting in this area, best practice is to remove all cuticle that is directly attached to the nail plate, so polish and other nail products can adhere directly to the nail and not atop the cuticle. To gently detach cuticle from the nail plate, dip a 2×2 gauze square in cuticle remover and gently scrub the nail plate in a circular motion up to the eponychium. Trim excess cuticle or hangnails with a sharp cuticle nipper.

However, Sue moved her focus onto education, after finding a passion for teaching. During the pursuit of teaching qualifications at Huddersfield University, Sue was offered a position as teacher/trainer inside FE colleges across West Yorkshire where she further realized her passion for education. Once qualified, Sue onto complete assessor and Internal verification awards and has now been working in FE colleges for the last eight years.

A very popular style in Asia, it's surprising how easy it is to create this sophisticated nail art design. Using a simple set of tools and products, this design is crafted easily when placing plastic wrap over builder gel. Once cured, the raised surface is highlighted with chrome powder before encapsulation. Once the surface is smoothed and evened out with a further layer of builder gel, the design is then carefully placed on top, giving depth and dimension. Elegance is then added in the placing of gold leaf across the design to elevate the look.

One Stroke: From Canvas to Nails

Exploring the Historical Origins of the One Stroke Nail Art Technique

In 1995 American artist Donna S. Dewberry, patented a ‘One Stroke’ technique that she’d develop. This new idea allowed painters to blend, shade and highlight all in one stroke of a brush. The concept consists of loading a brush with two or three separate colors and achieving the shading and highlighting in just one simple stroke. By 2010 nail technicians around the globe began adopting this technique for their nail art. Archival records and articles Circa 1700’s show that the Schools of Art in the UK trained apprentices in the ‘onestroke’ style as it was a quick method of painting for commercial reasons – to speedily decorate furniture, pottery and trays for selling.

Building the tropical parrot scene in steps allows the artist to follow each part of the process with ease. From placing glitter flakes in the background to adding foliage, then line-drawing the parrot before color pigment powders are used to build up its plummage, the parrot comes to life in the last stages as detailing in black paint is added.
