What it is: AKA lacquer, enamel, polish. A bottle & brush formula of polymer resins, plastisizers, solvents & pigments that create a hard, flexible nail coating.
How to use it: Used to beautify or strengthen the nail.
How to apply it: Most often used with a base coat, then 2 layers of color, then finished with a shiny or matte top coat.
How to remove it: Apply acetone or polish remover on a cotton pad, then gently press to the nail & slowly pull off the nail polish towards the free edge.
How to store it: Store with lids tightly closed in a cool, dry place & keep away from heat & light.

What it is: Small circular disposable abrasive bands in different grits that fit over a mandrel barrel on an electric file to shape or smooth artificial nails.
How to use it: Electric file education is recommended before used on clients.
How to apply it: Apply to the mandrel barrel & insert into an electric file handpeice to file, shape or shorten an artificial nail enhancement.
How to disinfect: Sanding bands are disposable & must be discarded after use.
How to store it: New sanding bands should be stored in a covered container.

CUTICLE OIL [kyoo-ti-kuhl oil]

What it is: A cosmetic grade oil formulated to increase flexibility in the natural nail to nourish, condition & soften the surrounding skin & encourage cellular renewal.
How to use it: Proprietary oil blends vary according to manufacturer & their efficacy is determined by the ingredients used in the formulations.
How to apply it: Used to finish all nail services to nourish, condition & soften the surrounding skin & the natural nail. Also used as a retail product for clients to use at home.
How to remove it: Apply the cuticle oil to the nail & surounding skin with a fresh cotton swab or drip directly onto the cuticle area. Massage the oil into the skin to increase blood circulation to stimulate the matrix
How to store it: Store in a cool dark place away from heat & light.
How to disinfect: Wash hands with soap & water.

What it is: A generic term to describe the family of polymers and/or oligomers that are used to create artificial nail products. Acrygel, hard gel, liquid & powder, gel polish, resins, and dip systems all belong to this family. Sometimes used as a slang term for liquid and powder systems.
How to use it: Acrylic can be used to overlay a natural nail or nail tip, or to sculpt a nail extension. Can also be used for 3D art.
How to store it: Always store according to manufacterer’s instructions.

THREE-WAY BUFFER [Three-wey-buhf-er]

What it is: A nail buffer that has 3 different grits, usually 400 – 4000 meant to shine the surface of a natural nail or nail enhancement.
How to use it: Use on the natural nail to create a high shine when not using polish. Also used to create a high shine on liquid and powder nail enhancements during nail competitions when top coat isn’t allowed.
How to apply it: Use the lowest grit first to smooth the nail surface. Use the next highest grit for creating a matte sheen to the surface of the nail or enhancement. Use the highest grit side, usually 3000-4000 to create a high shine on the nail.
How to store it: Store new shiners in a covered or sealed container. Used shiners can be disposed of or given to the client for home use.
How to clean: Most nail shiners can not be disinfected and therefore can only be used on one client.

TWO-WAY BUFFER [Too-wey-buhf-er]

What it is: A nail buffer that has a different grit on each side, meant to smooth the surface of a nail enhancement.
How to use it: Use to buff the surface of the natural nail in preparation for nail enhancement service, or use after filing a nail enhancement to smooth. Also used to smooth the ridges of a natural nail during a manicure or buffing away debris when removing enhancement product.
How to apply it: Use the lowest grit first to remove scratches from the nail surface. Use the higher grit for smoothing the surface of the nail enhancement..
How to store it: Store new buffers in a covered or sealed container. Used buffers can be disposed of or given to the client for home use.
How to disinfect: Most nail buffers cannot be disinfected & therefore can only be used on one client.
