In an unprecedented move, the team at Nailympia took a series of requests to appeal scores from the latest Nailympia London, to a whole new level. “After noting that the Invent a Nail Shape competition was proving challenging for judges and creating confusion for competitors, it was necessary to relook at this competition and revitalise it,” reveals Alex Fox, global director of Nailympia Competitions. “It was clear that very few entries right across the globe have been actual shape and structure nail inventions since introducing this competition, however we have seen stunning nails crafted for this category, therefore it’s been hard to judge and has afforded concerns that if competitors were not fitting the brief, then should these entries be disqualified?
“I’m not one to disqualify unless it’s deemed absolutely necessary, therefore we needed to find a solution that works now and moving into the future.”
Opting for a solution-oriented approach, the team, inspired by head judge Marian Newman’s insight, decided to listen to industry feedback. Marian Newman observed that competitors were pushing for an industry shift, seeking a competition that allowed complete creative autonomy over shape and design after establishing the stiletto structure. The competitors wanted to create a stiletto nail and from there let their creative juices go wild and bring a new-fashioned nail to life. From this premise it was decided to take all the entries that had been submitted, scored and awarded for Invent A Nail Shape, at Nailympia London 2023, and move them into a new competition. The criteria was reformed, the initial 4 judges from the original competition were invited to re-score the entries and a fifth judge was added, giving the competition 13 different criteria. Now, six weeks after the event, Nailympia London 2023 presents To Stiletto & Beyond, which affords three winners across three divisions who will receive a certificate by email and a medal in the post. Additionally, score sheets for this new category will be sent to all participants, providing a comprehensive and fair evaluation of their creative endeavours. To Stiletto & Beyond will replace Invent A Nail Shape at Nailympia London.

Since then, the nail trend has been popping up on perfectly manicured hands around the world and has even been spotted on the runways of global fashion weeks. Curtain bangs, with over 4.2 billion engagements is the second biggest beauty trend that’s been everywhere this year, and just behind, with 3.1 billion engagements, is glass skin. Other trends in the top 10 include micro-needling, lymphatic drainage, ceramides and faux freckles.

Are you Ready For 2024’s Biggest Beauty Trends
To discover the ingredients, products, techniques, and approaches that will be trending in 2024, Beauty Pie’s research team tracked and analysed Google search volume for hundreds of new trends. By calculating the total number of Google searches over the past six months and comparing it to the previous six months, the beauty experts have revealed, which ones are seeing the biggest spike in popularity in the run-up to 2024.
The Scandi hairline is the top trend that the experts expect to see everywhere next year. Made popular by the likes of Matilda Djerf, the coloring trend involves adding lightener onto the hair that naturally falls onto your face. The result? Better framed features and an instant pop of color to give that Scandi cool glow. Google searches for Scandi hairline have surged by 6,748% ahead of 2024, so it’s definitely one to watch.
Other hair trends also dominate the top 10 – in fact almost half of the trends in the ranking are related to hair styles. The butterfly bob has seen popularity spike by 466%, interest in the preppy bob has increased by 311% and vanilla chai hair has also seen a 257% surge in Google searches ahead of 2024.
Cherry cola lips (+2,215%), espresso make-up (+678%) and balletcore make-up (+253%) are three make-up looks in the top 10, and chocolate milk nails (+1,350%), lavender chrome nails (+369%), and milk bath nails (+286%) are three nail trends that are set to influence 2024.
Starting her nail journey from sheer boredom while working for a high street bank in 1999, Steph Smith, already qualified in depilation, decided to go to college to get further qualifications. After completing manicure and pedicure, Steph took a Saturday job in a salon to gain experience. “I was quickly put onto more professional courses and asked if I’d train in gel nail enhancements, which I gladly did,” Steph recalls. “After working in a series of salons, I opened my own in 2004. Not knowing the industry so well back then, I threw myself into Nail Professional of the Year and Nail Salon of the Year competitions and was surprised when I reached the finals of both categories for three consecutive years.
“Several years later, emerging from personal trauma, I found myself renting salon space and flitting from here to there, never completely settling. However, 19 years down the line, I’ve built everything back up and now run my own salon again. I made the career change into nails at the age of 40 and now, as I approach my 60th birthday, my love of nails is greater than ever. I’m delighted to be in my own salon again. You’re never too old to chase your dreams.”

Claws by Tiger Taylor is the world’s first biodegradable and sustainable answer to the global artificial/ plastic press-on nail industry. Born out of lockdown nail enthusiast, Tiger Taylor, realised the need for an eco-friendly and easy-to-use alternative to acrylic plastic nails. A mission-driven beauty business looking to change the way people think about nails, Claws, by Tiger Taylor, nail products aim to change the perception of ‘fake’ and acrylic nails by providing a product that is both fashion considered and sustainable.
This elevated nail kit is the world’s first recyclable, biodegradable, compostable and sustainable way to enjoy nail transformation. Both the nails and case are made from biodegradable plastic. The case is both durable and reusable, but when composted in the right conditions, it’s eventually biodegradable. The Claws nails are made from oxybiodegradable plastic, also known as OBP, which contains an antioxidant and pro-oxidant additive that acts as an accelerator in the degradation process. The material is totally biodegradable and can be safely consumed by microorganisms in the soil, thus being transformed into carbon, water and humus. So, instead of the 400 years it takes for regular plastic nail tips to dissolve, the degradation process of this product is approximately 2-3years, in the right conditions. By purchasing a set of Claws by Tiger Taylor, you are helping to change the market by using this innovative and sustainable solution to nail beauty. For nail professionals, at last there is an alternative for press-on nails, for color pops, for editorial and session shoots and the masses of nail tips used at fashion weeks.
